WARNING! The following content is strictly PREDICTIONS! None of the followings is confirmed by First Lego League. We will not know the actual set of rules and requirements until August 30th at noon when the full challenge is released.
Get ready. Get Set. ROAR! Or you could bark, quack, or squeak because the 2016 Animal Allies season is all about our furry, feathered or finned friends! Mark your calendars because next month we will all learn “What might become possible when we learn to help each other?” The folks over at First Lego League have been keeping any and all details about this year’s challenge top secret, but that doesn’t mean we can’t speculate!
On August 1st at noon we will get a glimpse of this year’s robot game when the module building instructions are released. That being said, we won’t know any of the game rules or objectives until August 30th when the full challenge is released. This is a big change from last year’s Trash Trek game, as we had to wait until the challenge release to know anything about the missions. Last year FLL hosted a “guess the missions” competition where teams were asked to make predictions on what the FLL game might be. Unfortunately, there doesn’t appear to be any competition this year, but that didn’t stop us! Here are our predictions for what we would like to see in the upcoming 2016 – 2017 FLL season.
The Project: The tag line for this season is; “What might become possible when we learn to help each other?” Matching this information with the logo and teaser video, it is safe to assume we are going to be asked to pick an animal to research. The specifics of this animal are still unknown. Some of our speculations include service animals, endangered animals, threatened animals, or animals hunted only for their products. However, some of the animals we see in the teaser and the logo don’t fall into any of these categories, so it will most likely be any animal that helps humans in some way.
Once your team determines an animal, you will have to research it, and how it is helpful to mankind. The research portion of this year’s challenge will most likely be no different than years past. So let’s move onto the solution. In order to be eligible for an award at your tournament, you will need to come up with a solution to your team’s chosen problem. So now it is up to your team to develop a unique and creative solution to help your chosen animal. This is where the challenge rule book will have more information as it is still unclear what problem we will be asked to solve. For example, if a team chooses elephants as their animal, it may be very difficult for them to implement a solution to help elephants unless they have a connection to a zoo or some kind or endangered species organization.
Robot Game: This year’s robot game will probably take place on a mat with a variety of different zones and ecosystems. Similar to the Nature’s Fury Mat or Trash Trek Mat, we are most likely to see printed pictures on the mat representing different biomes, or homes for animals. The missions will probably resemble and relate to helping animals. I think your robot will have to travel to these different areas where the animals live to perform a task to help the animal. While all the missions won’t strictly be rescuing an animal, they will have some tie to improving an animal’s way of life. (Environmental changes, ect)
At this time it is very hard to predict any specific mission concepts, but one idea has been circulating the internet ever since the theme was released. The FLL Chicken! The FLL chicken has made an appearance in both the Food Factor and Trash Trek seasons, and with it a theme of animals it is not unlikely to see this little fellow again. Who knows, it may turn into a running easter egg each year!
There are our predictions for the upcoming 2016 – 2017 Animal Allies season. We are anxiously awaiting the building instructions so we can start predicting what your robot will have to complete in each mission. That will be posted once we get our mat and most of the modules built. Until then, comment below what YOU think we are going to see in the upcoming season! Good Luck Teams!
